We wrote a special report in January of this year titled "Substituting Debt for Savings and Productive Investment" in which we explained why the U.S. economy historically prospered because of hard working Americans saving a substantial amount of their income which was used for productive investment. Unfortunately, all of this changed over the past few decades and got worse over the past decade. In fact, we stated in the report that it took $1.50 of debt to generate $1 of GDP in the 1960s, $1.70 to generate $1 of GDP in the '70s, $2.90 in the '80s, $3.20 in the '90s, and an unbelievable $5.40 of debt to generate $1 of GDP in the latest decade. Over the past two decades, while most investors thought this trend could continue indefinitely, we have been warning them of the catastrophic problems associated with this ballooning debt.

The attached chart of total debt relative to GDP shows exactly how much debt grew in this country relative to GDP (it is now 375% of GDP). The total debt grew to over $52 trillion relative to our current GDP of approximately $14 trillion. This is worse than the debt to GDP relationship in the great depression (even when the GDP imploded) and greater than the debt to GDP that existed in Japan in 1989. Even if you took the debt to GDP when the U.S. entered the secular bear market in early 2000 and compared that to 1929 and Japan in late 1989, our debt to GDP still exceeded both (by a substantial margin relative to 1929). The approximate numbers at that time were about 275% in the U.S. in early 2000, 190% in 1929, and about 270% in Japan in 1989.

Economic View
It May Be Time for the Fed to Go Negative

The Federal Government Claims That Goldman Has Stock Manipulation Software

The NYT had a bizarre piece in which it reported on the FBI's arrest of a former Goldman Sachs employee because he allegedly stole software from Goldman Sachs which the article says a federal prosecutor claims: "could be used to 'unfairly manipulate' stock prices."

The article is peculiar because it focuses on the intellectual property issues between Goldman and a former employee who had worked on developing the software. It almost completely ignores the more basic issue that the federal government effectively claims that Goldman Sachs has software that can be used to manipulate stock prices. If the software can be used for illegal purposes, why is it more serious that a relatively low level employee has access to it than Goldman Sachs' top executives?

Well I am with liberal. The early reporting on this software theft was coincident with the reporting that Goldman-Sachs had emerged from the financial crash with some stunningly better profits than most of its rivals. Take this article from Bloomberg on July 14.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a2jo3RK2_Aps
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. posted record earnings as revenue from trading and stock underwriting reached all-time highs less than a year after the firm took $10 billion in U.S. rescue funds.

Second-quarter net income was $3.44 billion, or $4.93 a share, the New York-based bank said today in a statement. That surpassed the $3.65 per-share average estimate of 22 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg and was 65 percent higher than last year’s second quarter.

Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein, after repaying the government’s bailout money along with $426 million in dividends to taxpayers, is reverting to a business model analysts deemed irretrievably broken during the global credit crisis. While rivals including Morgan Stanley have pared risks, Goldman Sachs has increased them this year. Not everyone was shy in suggesting that those "increased" risks were mitigated by this propietary software that allowed G-S to front-run trading. But the non-bashful people seemed to be confined to the blogosphere and never seemed to see the light of day at the WSJ, the WaPo or Bloomberg. Even the article linked doesn't hint at the reality that darue and others here see so clearly.

Goldman-Sachs is suing because an employee stole their theft machine. It seems to be as simple as that.

Dense about density

Right now, I’m on New Jersey Transit, near Rahway. Around me is a post-apocalyptic wasteland dense development as far as the eye can see. And not a buffalo in sight.

And you know what? A large fraction of the American population lives in places like this. Yes, America overall has low density, but many of us live in high-density corridors; very few of us live in the wide open spaces. That’s why arguments that, say, we can’t have high-speed rail, because America’s population density is so low, are profoundly stupid.

Which does not, of course,
stop them from being made.

Top ten terrible tech products

Windows Vista
Any operating system that provokes a campaign for its predecessor's reintroduction deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that quietly has a downgrade-to- previous-edition option introduced for PC makers deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that takes six years of development but is instantly hated by hordes of PC professionals and enthusiasts deserves to be classed as terrible technology.

Windows Vista conforms to all of the above. Its incompatibility with hardware, its obsessive requirement of human interaction to clear security dialogue box warnings and its abusive use of hated DRM, not to mention its general pointlessness as an upgrade, are just some examples of why this expensive operating system earns the final place in our terrible tech list.

Roubini said another reason to worry is that energy, food and oil prices are rising faster than fundamentals warrant, and could be driven higher by speculation or if excessive liquidity creates artificially high demand.

He said the global economy "could not withstand another contractionary shock" if speculation drives oil rapidly toward US$100 per barrel. U.S. crude oil futures traded Friday at about US$73.83.

Roubini said the anemic growth he expects would follow a couple of quarters of rapid growth, as inventories and production levels recover from near-depression levels.

Health care debate turns vile with Nazi analogy
Right-wing loudmouths distort history, diminish true evil of the Holocaust
Rush Limbaugh and those invoking the Nazi analogy to attack President Barack Obama’s effort to reform health care in America are not “insane” as David Brooks pronounced on last Sunday's “Meet the Press.” Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and the rest of the loud-mouthed right wing are, when they even hint at an analogy to the Nazis in talking about Obama’s health reform effort, engaged in something far worse than insanity. Thus the two problems beg a solution, a solution that is linked and limbered to each other as few others can be. With well over 1.5 million members of the farming class, in America, facing or experiencing failure or at best, just barely hanging on, Russia can offer an outlet of abundant land for these masses.

Several initiatives will make this possible. Russia should offer these farmers twenty acres a piece and allow them to buy more for hard cash, no loans. It should then attach with this a mandatory one year road to citizenship, free transportation of the farm equipment and animals from the US to Russia and a low interested fixed rate loan for building (where needed) a homestead and starting capital for the first year's season.

In exchange, these farmers will agree to several conditions and will in turn provide key benefits. The first issue is loyalty. To assure this, immigrants and their families will agree in writing to take up Russian citizenship within 1 year of arrival. Before immigration takes place, they will be given six months to learn a set minimum fluency in the Russian language and Russian history/culture.

CIA-Blackwater assassination contract points to larger connections
The 2004 deal was just one part of a revolving-door relationship between the agency and the private security firm. Use of outside contractors for such activities has come under widespread criticism.

Reporting from Washington - The CIA's decision to hire contractors from Blackwater USA for a covert assassination program was part of an expanding relationship in which the agency has relied on the widely criticized firm for tasks ranging from guarding CIA lockups to loading missiles on Predator aircraft, according to current and former U.S. government officials.

The 2004 contract cemented what was then a burgeoning relationship with Blackwater, setting the stage for a series of departures by senior CIA officials who took high-level positions with the North Carolina security company.

In hot water: World sets ocean temperature record

WASHINGTON – Steve Kramer spent an hour and a half swimming in the ocean Sunday — in Maine. The water temperature was 72 degrees — more like Ocean City, Md., this time of year. And Ocean City's water temp hit 88 degrees this week, toasty even by Miami Beach standards.

Kramer, 26, who lives in the seaside town of Scarborough, said it was the first time he's ever swam so long in Maine's coastal waters. "Usually, you're in five minutes and you're out," he said.

It's not just the ocean off the Northeast coast that is super-warm this summer. July was the hottest the world's oceans have been in almost 130 years of record-keeping.

Reversing the Economic Plunge
Will Germany Beat the US to Recovery?

By Moira Herbst

The race to economic health is pitting export-driven economies with strong social-assistance programs against those that count on consumer spending. Germany and Europe are looking good this quarter, but doubts persist about whether the recovery can be sustained.

It has been a rhetorical battle of Anglo-Saxon vs. Continental capitalism. Since the onset of the economic crisis, German leaders have scored political points by railing against the flaws of the US and British economic systems, even as counterparts such as US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown pressed for bigger economic stimulus packages. Just this month, German Economics Minister Peer Steinbrück warned that the "casino capitalism" practiced in overseas financial centers will resume without stronger regulation.

Materials to keep drinks cold or hot for longer have been around for quite a while. Now a pair of German scientists has come up with a high-tech mug they claim keeps coffee at the perfect temperature.

The idea came to the researchers at the Christmas market in the Bavarian town of Rosenhiem. "We got upset because the mulled wine" -- Glühwein, in German -- "was always either too hot or too cold," say Klaus Sedlbauer, the head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP), and his colleague Herbert Sinnesbichler. "We had to find a solution."

In-Flight Rearming
July 31, 2006: The U.S. Air Force is developing an in-flight rearming system. In-flight refueling has been around for over 60 years. An in-flight rearming system has been developed that can move bombs and missiles, via a boom, from the rear of a supply aircraft (like a C-17) to the hard points on aircraft wings, where a precision alignment and movement system would attach the weapon. The air force developed this system, and filed a patent application for it, because the U.S. may find itself fighting in areas where there are no friendly countries providing landing and rearming capabilities. In this case, warplanes, including UAVs, could be refueled and rearmed near combat zones, and kept in action for extended periods. Some UAVs can stay in the air for over 48 hours per flight. Piloted aircraft are limited by the physical endurance of their pilots.

Research has shown that although one brainwave state may predominate at any given time, depending on the activity level of the individual, the remaining three brain states are present in the mix of brainwaves at all times. In other words, while somebody is an aroused state and exhibiting a beta brainwave pattern, there also exists in that person's brain a component of alpha, theta and delta, even though these may be present only at the trace level.

The presence of ambient Extremely Low Frequency Radiation (ELF) waves has again been verified. This data has the remarkable property of being of geometric form, with the frequencies occurring almost exclusively as multiples of 4 Hz. It appears reasonable to conclude that the frequencies being captured are likely of artificial design with an undeclared purpose. The human brain operates primarily within the same range of frequencies that are repeatedly being recorded. The graph above shows the unusual nature of this data;(data privi)

A most unexpected and unusual result of the current work is the role that the human being can assume in the detection of these frequencies. It has been found that the human organism, acting in conjunction with the primary large inductance coil (antenna) of the circuit, provides sufficient amplification to the signal to allow reliable detection and logging of the data. That is to say, if a human runs a wire in parallel from the skin to the inductor lead, the geometric form of these frequencies is easily detected. It appears, therefore, that the human being acts in some sort of resonant or amplification capacity with this particular circuit.

... so next time you think god is taking to you ...
... make sure is not the dog ...

Download capping is the new DRM.
It ensures several things:
- You will be more hesitant to download movies and music legitimately--even though you've paid to watch/listen.
- You will watch more cable TV (so you can see all those great ads).
- You will accidentally pay more for less.
- Pirates get a whacking.
Big media and ISPs can't effectively eliminate piracy by going after pirates directly or stop online video and music streaming services. So they have a better plan now: go after everyone.

If the recession is over, as some economists say, why are so many people still unemployed? The so-called jobless recovery is raising an intriguing question: Should America resurrect something like the Works Progress Administration (WPA) - the New Deal job-creation program that put millions of unemployed Americans to work building schools, roads, parks, libraries and other needed infrastructure projects during the Great Depression?

Indeed, the current situation is stark. When people say there are no jobs out there, it's true. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at the start of the recession in December 2007, the ratio of job seekers to job openings was 1.5 to 1. Now six unemployed workers chase every available job. It's a brutal game of musical chairs in which a great many people lose and spiral downward economically with disastrous consequences, not only for themselves and their families, but also for communities that were once productive and prosperous. (See pictures of life during the Great Depression.)

Programs that use treacherous computing will continually download new authorization rules through the Internet, and impose those rules automatically on your work. If Microsoft, or the US government, does not like what you said in a document you wrote, they could post new instructions telling all computers to refuse to let anyone read that document. Each computer would obey when it downloads the new instructions. Your writing would be subject to 1984-style retroactive erasure. You might be unable to read it yourself.

There is one small problem, though. If you turn TC off, Fritz won't hand out the keys you need to decrypt your files and run your bank account. Your TC-enabled apps won't work as well, or maybe at all. It will be like switching from Windows to Linux nowadays; you may have more freedom, but end up having less choice. If the TC apps are more attractive to most people, or are more profitable to the app vendors, you may end up simply having to use them - just as many people have to use Microsoft Word because all their friends and colleagues send them documents in Microsoft Word. By 2008, you may find that the costs of turning TC off are simply intolerable.

This has some interesting implications for national security. At a TCG symposium in Berlin, I put it this way: in 2010 President Clinton may have two red buttons on her desk - one that sends the missiles to China, and another that turns off all the PCs in China - and guess which the Chinese will fear the most? (At this point, a heckler from the audience said, `What about the button that turns off the PCs in Europe?') This may be an exaggeration, but it's only a slight one. Technology policy and power politics have been intertwined since the Roman empire, and prudent rulers cannot disregard the strategic implications of TC. It would be rather inconvenient for a government to have to switch all its systems from Windows to GNU/linux, and at the height of an international crisis.

A French teenager has been injured by his girlfriend's exploding iPhone, little more than a week after Apple was accused of trying to suppress news of an exploding iPod Touch.
According to the AFP, Marie-Dominique Kolega contacted Apple after her son was hit by a flying piece of Jobsian status symbol. Apparently, the iPhone made a hissing noise before the screen shattered, sending shards through the air. "My son was frightened but he did not lose an eye," Kolega told AFP.

Drug Promises Fix for Radiation Poisoning
Dirty bombs are one of the biggest threats to the world's urban populations. Now an American molecular biologist has developed a drug that may protect against the effects of radioactivity. Military officials are thrilled, and the discoverers could make billions.
...
Until now, doctors have felt largely helpless when it comes to treating so-called radiation sickness. Ionizing radiation destroys the building blocks of cells, leading directly to cell death. It can also produce changes in genetic material, which are passed on during subsequent cell division, contributing to the development of cancers. Medicine has offered virtually no protection against nuclear radiation until now, except in the form of iodine tablets, which merely prevent radioactive iodine from accumulating in the thyroid gland.
...
The effects of CBLB502, discovered by the American molecular geneticist Andrei Gudkov, are believed to be far more comprehensive. The agent consists of a protein derived from salmonella bacteria. The bacterial protein attaches itself to the receptor on a radiation-damaged cell, which would normally activate the immune system.

Attorney General Holder has decided on a "narrow" investigation into torture. In fact, it's so narrow that it won't investigate any of the torture that was authorized by DOJ functionary John Yoo at all. Using inverted pretzel logic, they are apparently going to go after those who failed to follow John Yoo's directives.

For instance, according to the LA Times, Holder will not investigate allegations of waterboarding in themselves, but rather if they failed to properly follow their waterboarding instructions to the letter

Consumer protections lost in health care debate

WASHINGTON – It's one issue in the health care debate that nearly everyone — even the insurance lobby — seems to agree on: Better consumer protections are needed to end the nightmare of not being able to get covered for a treatable, if costly, illness.

Yet such practical considerations are being overlooked in a debate that's become a passionate argument about the government's reach and role in medical matters.

Casa, meglio affitto o mutuo?
Dopo 15 anni vince chi compra

Germany's Steinbrück Warns of Return of 'Casino Capitalism'

Germany's finance minister, known for his fierce criticism of banking excesses that caused the global financial crisis, is warning that the plague of "casino capitalism" is returning to some banking centers. He also takes a stab at German executives.

With the return of profits, banks and executives are again getting large bonuses. "Some didn't hear the bang," warns Germany's Peer Steinbrück.

German Court Rules in Favor of Fixed-Gear Cyclist

A court in Bonn, Germany ruled this week that the fixed-gear mechanism in popular but illegal "fixie" bicycles should be considered the same as brakes. The bike's owner will no longer face a stiff fine but it seems unlikely the case will serve as a precedent elsewhere in the country.

A local court in the German city of Bonn has ruled this week that the fixed-gear on so-called "fixie" bicycles should be recognized as a braking system. It's a case that is likely to draw considerable attention in a country that in recent weeks has been cracking down on the popular bicycles which, once used exclusively as racing bikes in velodromes, have now become popular with bike messengers and everyday cyclists.

There’s something about the texture of paper…the sensation of flipping through page after page to reveal the story within. Jeremy Leggett: Another crunch is coming – but will the world act?

There is one major similarity between the energy crisis and the financial crisis and one main difference. These two things tell us a lot about the role of cultures in how our modern version of capitalism plays out.

The similarity is that we are dealing with two massive global industries who have their asset assessment systemically, and roundly, wrong. The difference is that few people and organisations warned about the credit crunch as it approached, where as with the oil crunch, a host of people – many in and around the oil industry – are shouting a warning, and so to are a few good organisations concerned companies span British industry.

... the second is the effect of the first ...
... the capitalistic model is obsolete as much as the socialist model ...
... the industrial revolution will become the industrial devolution ...
... there wont be a solution until paper money will be worth its intrinsec value ...
... planetwise ...
... more or less as much as toelette paper ...
... then we can look at barter economy and gold standard again ...

Quattro sbarramenti, Emilia contro
Lombardia.

...
Lino Zanichelli è assessore all’Ambiente della Regione Emilia Romagna. Altra sponda, altro colore politico.

ISTANBUL (AFP) – Turkey on Friday bitterly marked 50 years since its first application to integrate formally with Europe, a date overshadowed by its troubled EU accession talks.

"We remember this anniversary but it's not a cause for celebration," Turkey's chief negotiator with the EU, Egemen Bagis, said in a statement.

"Our country has no longer any tolerance for time wasting and delays... We have to learn lessons from past mistakes, fulfill our responsibilities and achieve the goal of full membership as soon as possible," he said, stressing Ankara's determination to continue on the path of reform.

Bishop: Facebook, MySpace Leads to Suicide

Some say that money is the root of all evil. However, Archbishop Vincent Nichols believes that social websites such as Facebook and MySpace are just as wicked, pulling teens out of reality by de-sensitizing one-on-one personal relationships, leaving them unable to cope when social networks crumble. He said that social websites do not produce "rounded" communities, but rather leaves teens with impoverished friendships.

Party offers a third way: happiness
New force vows to allow in millions more foreigners, attack North Korea if voters tick the 'Happy' box

By DAVID McNEILL

As a historic general election looms on Aug. 30, Japan's long-suffering electorate faces a clear choice: vote for the conservative party that has virtually monopolized power since 1955, or opt for its more liberal but untested rival, which promises long-awaited reform. For those with a taste for the apocalyptic, however, there is always the Happiness Realization Party.

According to the Happiness Realization Party's Web site, President Ryuho Okawa is a reincarnation of Buddha who achieved Great Enlightenment in 1981 "and awakened to the hidden part of his consciousness, El Cantare, whose mission is to bring happiness to all humanity."

Offering what it calls a "third choice," the Happies have an eye-catching manifesto: multiply Japan's population by 2 1/2 to 300 million and make it the world's No. 1 economic power, and rapidly rearm for conflict with North Korea and China. If elected, the party's lawmakers will invite millions of foreigners to work here, inject religion into all areas of life, and fight to overcome Japan's "colonial" mentality, which has "fettered" the nation's true claim to global leadership.

A Happiness commercial posted on YouTube last week lays out the stakes. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is preparing to nuke Tokyo's Imperial Palace, bring Japan to its knees and enslave its people. "Japan will be unable to do anything about this because of its Constitution," Kim sneers in the clip, referring to the so-called pacifist clause — Article 9 — of the 1947 document, written under U.S. Occupation, which renounces the right to wage war.

... besides the two and half times population ...
... that looks out of reality ...
... and the "more religion" issue ...
... that may be quite opinable ...

June sees record fall in wages
Bloomberg

Wages fell at their fastest pace on record in June as companies cut bonuses to protect dwindling profits, adding to evidence that consumers are unlikely to contribute to an economic recovery.

Monthly wages including overtime and bonuses dropped 7.1 percent from a year earlier to ¥430,620, the sharpest decline since the survey began in 1990, the labor ministry said Monday. Bonuses shrank 14.5 percent.

SPD's 'Unrealistic' Jobs Pledge Risks Drowning Out Solid Economic Plan

German media commentators have scoffed at an election pledge by the center-left SPD to create four million new jobs in the next decade. But some say the party's underlying 'Germany Plan' is a coherent strategy to focus the economy on green technology.

Germany's Social Democrats risk shooting themselves in the foot with their "Germany Plan" to create 4 million jobs over the next decade, write several media commentators. The pledge is too bold to convince voters who remember previous broken promises to slash unemployment, most notably by former chancellors Gerhard Schröder and Helmut Kohl.

... the actual need is for at least 8 millions of new jobs ...
... and it is possible, but it will be useless "by 2020" ...
... because the western world could be already in chaos by then ...
... the eight million jobs are needed within two years ...
... here, something to think about, from GBS ...

Compared to other leading nations, the US spends vastly more per head on healthcare, while often getting worse outcomes. Despite these high and rising costs, which have set the nation on course for bankruptcy, the US lags behind other countries on measures such as life expectancy at birth (see graph) and infant mortality.

People who have health insurance get excessive medical interventions, escalating costs so that tens of millions can't afford it. Those left uninsured have minimal access to healthcare, and are likely to contribute significantly to the country's relatively poor health outcomes. Even the insured could be sent to an earlier grave by risky interventions they don't need.

Research at the Dartmouth School of Medicine in New Hampshire shows how high-spending regions of the country are driving the spiralling costs. Insurers and the government pay set fees for each medical intervention performed. In some regions, doctors in institutions that are competing to become "centres of excellence" in high-paying fields may use unnecessary diagnostic tests, and surgeons often perform expensive procedures when cheap drugs may be a better option.

LA NINNA NANNA DE LA GUERRA
(1914)

Ninna nanna, nanna ninna,
er pupetto vò la zinna:
dormi, dormi, cocco bello,
sennò chiamo Farfarello
Farfarello e Gujermone
che se mette a pecorone,
Gujermone e Ceccopeppe
che se regge co le zeppe,
co le zeppe d'un impero
mezzo giallo e mezzo nero.
Ninna nanna, pija sonno
ché se dormi nun vedrai
tante infamie e tanti guai
che succedeno ner monno
fra le spade e li fucili
de li popoli civili
Ninna nanna, tu nun senti
li sospiri e li lamenti
de la gente che se scanna
per un matto che commanna;
che se scanna e che s'ammazza
a vantaggio de la razza
o a vantaggio d'una fede
per un Dio che nun se vede,
ma che serve da riparo
ar Sovrano macellaro.
Chè quer covo d'assassini
che c'insanguina la terra
sa benone che la guerra
è un gran giro de quatrini
che prepara le risorse
pe li ladri de le Borse.
Fa la ninna, cocco bello,
finchè dura sto macello:
fa la ninna, chè domani
rivedremo li sovrani
che se scambieno la stima
boni amichi come prima.
So cuggini e fra parenti
nun se fanno comprimenti:
torneranno più cordiali
li rapporti personali.
E riuniti fra de loro
senza l'ombra d'un rimorso,
ce faranno un ber discorso
su la Pace e sul Lavoro
pe quer popolo cojone
risparmiato dar cannone!

Britain to Ban Most Private Organ Transplants

LONDON — The British government said Friday that it plans to ban private organ transplants from dead donors to allay fears that prospective recipients can buy their way to the front of the line.

A government-commissioned report recommended that organs donated within the state-run National Health Service should stay within the public health system.

Very few Britons have private transplants, so in practice the new rules will stop overseas patients from coming to Britain and paying privately for a transplant.

The report by Elisabeth Buggins, former head of the Organ Donation Taskforce, was commissioned after a media storm over cases in which foreign patients were given transplants from dead Britons.

Buggins said that for most people, "financial gain from the transplant of donated organs feels morally wrong."

Germans Hoarding Traditional Light Bulbs
The staggered phase out of energy-wasting light bulbs begins on Sept. 1 in Germany. The unpopularity of the energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs that will replace them is leading consumers and retailers to start hoarding the traditional bulbs.
