Said Hirsch: “This was an indication of just how powerful this zeitgeist was.” In the end, it was unregulated derivatives like credit default swaps that proved to be major instigators of the financial crisis.

BTK Serial Killer 'Hid in Plain Sight'

The man arrested for the BTK serial murders evaded detection for more than three decades by "hiding in plain sight" in his community -- as a city employee, a cub scout leader, and an active member of his church.
Dennis Rader, 59, who was arrested last week in connection with the investigation into the BTK serial killer murders, was employed as a compliance officer for animal control by nearby Park City, Kansas. Reports said he was a former cub scout leader and a leader in his local church.
In fact, Rader was listed as the president of the Christ Lutheran Church congregation, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), according to the church's web site, before the site was removed from the Internet over the weekend.

A Survival Strategy for the Eurozone - Nouriel Roubini

The crisis started with too much private debt and leverage, which became public debt and deficits as crisis and recession triggered fiscal deterioration and private losses were mostly socialized via bailouts of financial systems. Then, distressed sovereigns that had already lost market access – Greece and Ireland – were bailed out by the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.
But no one will bail out these super-sovereigns if the sovereigns prove to be insolvent. Thus, the current strategy of kicking the can down the road will soon reach its limits, and a different plan will be needed to save the eurozone.

Waiting until 2013 to implement these restructurings, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel proposes, will destroy confidence, as it implies a much larger haircut on residual private claims on sovereign borrowers.
Thus, orderly market-based restructurings via exchange offers need to occur in 2011. Such exchange offers can limit private creditors’ losses if they are done early. That way, formal haircuts on the face value of debt can be avoided via new bonds that include only a maturity extension and an interest-rate cap that is set below today’s unsustainable market rates. Waiting to restructure unsustainable debts would only lead to disorderly workouts and severe haircuts for some private creditors.

Finally, Europe needs policies that restore competitiveness and growth to the eurozone’s periphery, where GDP is either still contracting (Greece, Spain, and Ireland) or barely growing (Italy and Portugal). Without growth, it will be difficult to stabilize public and private debts and deficits as a share of GDP – the most important indicator of fiscal sustainability. Moreover, without growth, the social and political backlash against painful belt-tightening will eventually undermine austerity and reform.
Unfortunately, fiscal austerity and structural reforms are – at least in the short run – recessionary and deflationary. So other policies are needed to restore growth. The ECB should pursue a much looser monetary policy to jump-start growth, with a weaker euro to help boost the periphery’s competitiveness. In addition, Germany should delay its fiscal consolidation; if anything, it should cut taxes for a couple of years to boost its own growth and – via trade – that of the periphery.

L'esito di tutto ciò è che in Occidente, da 25 anni a questa parte, diminuiscono i lavori operai e impiegatizi, quelli che assicurano redditi medi, distrutti appunto dalla tecnologia e dalla globalizzazione e aumentano i lavori più poveri.

Licei occupati in difesa dei violenti
Per solidarietà. Poi mercoledì tutti in piazza. Studenti già in vacanza ma per troppe assenze rischia di ripetere l'anno anche chi non c'entra.

C'è un senso d'impotenza ma sugli occupanti a oltranza ora pende una spada di Damocle. La tanto vituperata riforma dei licei della Gelmini ha fatto scattare un tetto preciso: chi non frequenta i tre quarti dell'orario annuale (cioè cinquanta giorni di scuola) sarà bocciato. C'è la possibilità di deroghe, in casi eccezionali ma molti presidi hanno deciso di contare come assenze i giorni di occupazione. E a suon di occupazioni, cortei spontanei e flash mob tanti studenti hanno già totalizzato un sacco di assenze.
Inoltre ogni istituto è tenuto a fare 180 giorni di lezione all'anno. Se ciò non avviene c'è il rischio che l'anno scolastico venga annullato. Sarebbe un guaio perché ci andrebbero di mezzo anche quei ragazzi che non sono d'accordo con le occupazioni, la cosiddetta maggioranza silenziosa che abbozza. «E fa male - dice ancora la prof anonima - perché a imporre la rivolta è sempre una minoranza, strumentalizzata e pilotata dall'esterno». Intanto si delineano i prossimi appuntamenti: martedì presidi spontanei e mercoledì corteo per la città. Poi finalmente le vacanze!

Non dite che non c’e’ futuro.
Il futuro ve lo potete conquistare (senza ammazzare nessuno).
Vorrei commentare questa lettera inviata da una lettrice di Repubblica che si firma Martabcn, a Roberto Saviano.
“Caro Roberto. Le tue parole sono come sempre bellissime; ma questa volta, ahimé, sterili. Ho 26 anni, due lauree e tanta voglia di fare. Sono arrabbiata, stufa, sconfortata. Non ho più ragione di credere che con “le buone” si ottenga qualcosa, non a questi livelli. Un anno fa mi sarei indignata per Roma, oggi no, oggi sono felice. Perché è vero che la violenza è uno schifo, ma è l’ultima risorsa di chi è disperato. Uso questo termine non a caso: disperato è colui senza speranza. E io sono così. Io non ho futuro: ho 26 anni e non ne ho già più uno. Non potrò mai comprarmi una casa perché non farò mai un lavoro che mi permetta di accendere un mutuo, i miei genitori non possono aiutarmi economicamente e non so nemmeno se potrò mai comprarmi una macchina nuova. Una scuola che non ha saputo insegnare la passione e la professionalità.

God's Senator: Sam Brownback Seeks Christian Fascism, Theocracy
Sam Brownback is a Republican Senator from Kansas who would probably like to be President. The far Christian Right also seems to want him to be the next president because he agrees with all their most extreme views. Sam Brownback wants to be elected president, but it really doesn't appear that he believes in democracy as much as he believes in a fascist Christian theocracy.

Aveva affisso in bacheca la circolare per vietare il consumo di droga nelle ore di servizio, la direzione generale dell'Asl adotta la decisione con effetto immediato. Documento dei primari per chiedere misure atte a tutelare la rispettabilità dell'ospedale e del personale
LECCE - Il direttore sanitario dell'ospedale 'Santa Caterina Novella' di Galatina, Giuseppe De Maria, è stato sospeso dal servizio con decorrenza immediata. La direzione generale della Asl di Lecce non gli ha perdonato di aver firmato e affisso in bacheca la circolare con la quale il manager invita i medici e gli infermieri del nosocomio di Galatina a non sniffare cocaina durante l'orario di servizio.

La Cgil, invece, "stigmatizza con forza" il modo in cui "è stata gestita prima, e successivamente divulgata ed enfatizzata" la vicenda della circolare anti-cocaina "che è servita unicamente ad alimentare nell'opinione pubblica e nei cittadini un'idea profondamente errata e distorta dell'attività che, giorno dopo giorno, viene espletata con onestà, dignità, professionalità e spirito di dedizione dagli operatori e dai medici" dell'ospedale di Galatina.

Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine. Brent Scowcroft, who had by then replaced Kissinger as national security adviser (the same post Scowcroft was to hold in the Bush administration), was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, as were the secretaries of state, treasury, defense, and agriculture.
The bogus arguments that Kissinger advanced were not original. One of his major sources was the Royal Commission on Population, which King George VI had created in 1944 "to consider what measures should be taken in the national interest to influence the future trend of population." The commission found that Britain was gravely threatened by population growth in its colonies, since "a populous country has decided advantages over a sparsely-populated one for industrial production." The combined effects of increasing population and industrialization in its colonies, it warned, "might be decisive in its effects on the prestige and influence of the West," especially effecting "military strength and security."

Eustace Clarence Mullins, Jr.

Mullins frequently visited poet Ezra Pound during his period of incarceration in St. Elizabeths Hospital for the Mentally Ill in Washington, D.C. between 1946 and 1959. Mullins opined that Pound was being held as a political prisoner on the behest of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In Mullins on the Federal Reserve (1952), updated in 1983 as Secrets of the Federal Reserve, Mullins argued that there was a conspiracy among Paul Warburg, Edward Mandell House, Woodrow Wilson, J.P. Morgan, Benjamin Strong, Otto Kahn, the Rockefeller family, the Rothschild family, and other European and American bankers which resulted in the founding of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. He argued that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 defies Article 1, Section 8, Paragraph 5 of the United States Constitution by creating a "central bank of issue" for the United States. Mullins goes on to claim that World War I, the Agricultural Depression of 1920, the Great Depression of 1929, and Adolf Hitler's rise to power were brought about by international banking interests in order to profit from conflict and economic instability. Mullins also cited Thomas Jefferson's staunch opposition to the establishment of a central bank in the United States.
In the 1983 edition of his book, he argued that Kuhn, Loeb & Co. and the House of Morgan were fronts for the Rothschilds. He also alleged that the Rothschilds were world monopolists. He furthermore claimed that most of the stock of the Federal Reserve was indirectly owned by City of London bankers, since they owned much of the stock of the member banks. He attempted to trace stock ownership, as it changed hands via mergers and acquisitions, from the inception of the Federal Reserve in 1913 to the early 1980s.[5]
Eustace Mullins dedicated Secrets of the Federal Reserve to George Stimpson and Ezra Pound.
The following is a quote from the book's introduction by Ezra Pound: "Here are the simple facts of the great betrayal. Wilson and House knew that they were doing something momentous. One cannot fathom men's motives and this pair probably believed in what they were up to. What they did not believe in was representative government. They believed in government by an uncontrolled oligarchy whose acts would only become apparent after an interval so long that the electorate would be forever incapable of doing anything efficient to remedy depredations."

Until the late 1950s, very few Americans had an idea how the Federal Reserve System functioned. It was only on the initiative of the American poet Ezra Pound, and his student Eustace Mullins, that it would be clearly documented in a readable form.
Mullins had studied under Ezra Pound in the late 1940s, as had the poet T.S. Eliot. Pound understood the abstract nature of money, and the importance of that concept to society. One of the requirements he set for his students was that they read all of the available writings of Alexander Del Mar. T.S. Elliot went on to become one of America's greatest poets; Mullins' work would be just as important, exposing the fraudulent money and banking system. For a deeper insight into Ezra Pound and Mullins, I recommend a biography Mullins wrote on a part of Pound's life, called This Difficult Individual.

Mullins' book, The Federal Reserve Conspiracy, was published in 1954, and continues to be the definitive work on the Fed (Federal Reserve System) from that viewpoint. Through Mullins' work, many behind the scenes activities of highly placed financiers came to light.
The book is generally banned from discussion in Economics departments of Universities, as it doesn't hesitate to mention the names of many of the people responsible for foisting the Fed onto us. Many of the names are among the "cream" of America's financial establishment.
