Come eravamo, chi siamo e cosa diventeremo? Mai come in questi mesi il dibattito sul giornalismo è stato tanto intenso e confuso. Crisi economica (congiunturale) e crisi dell’editoria (strutturale) hanno costretto giornalisti e editori ad interrogarsi sul futuro: dalla professione che cambia al modello di business; dal ruolo del giornalismo nella società a quello dei lettori che chiedono trasparenza e partecipazione.

... fossilizzarsi su idee vecchie non porta da nessuna parte ...
... i giornali "gratuiti" in rete sono i veri vincitori ...
... neppure le agenzie di stampa di successo riescono a farsi pagare dagli abbonamenti ...
... figuriamoci i quotidiani ...

... in rete ci sono mercati nuovi e positivi ...
... serve "essere capaci" di vedere le nuove cose positive ...
... la pubblicita' in rete e' molto piu' efficace che sulla carta stampata ...
... i sondaggi e i blog interattivi, sono impossibili con la carta stampata ...
... gli annunci gratuiti locali, creano le comunita' ...
... un giornale che si rispetti e' in almeno quattro/cinque lingue ...
... video ed audio online sono decisamente piu' utili della carta ...
... per piacere usate sistemi compatibili, i sistemi "proprietari" ...
... mandano i vostri clienti a youtube ...
... o dai vostri concorrenti che hanno buon senso ...

... in particolare esiste un mondo di blogs da scoprire ...
... di talenti sconosciuti ed accessibili ...
... di informazione vera, anziche' della solita minestra di propaganda ...
... internet e' caratterizzata da un alto livello medio di cultura ...
... per questo sa distinguere tra informazione e "propaganda" ...
... giornalisti "seri" espongono anche l' informazione che non fa comodo ...
... forse con internet si ritornera' al "GRANDE" giornalismo del dopoguerra ...
... forse ci vuole piu' gente capace di "rischiare personalmente" ...
... non mi sembra che nessuno abbia sparato ad un giornalista italiano ...
... ne' ad uno americano, negli ultimi venti anni ...

... i giornali che non vogliono capire ...
... che la gente si e' svegliata e comincia a dubitare ...
... della propaganda di stile orwelliano ...
... finiranno estinti come i dinosauri ...
... quelli degni di essere chiamati "informazione" ...
... cresceranno su scala mondiale ...
... in misura che non sarebbe mai esistita con la carta ...
... il "giornalismo" sta diventando "vera industria" ...
... "CONSOLIDAMENTO", significa anche mergers, reti collaborazione, marchi ...
... un giorno i giornali saranno lo stesso numero delle marche di automobili ...
... ma i lettori di ogni testata (rimasta) saranno centinaia di milioni ...
... chissa' quale sara' la prima testata con un miliardo di lettori ...

... non capisco i giornalisti che si lamentano ...
... negli anni 80 per avere un sistema come google ...
... servivano miliardi, elaboratori mainframe, programmi come Loral ...
... ad ogni ministero trenta persone per preparare le rassegne stampa ...
... ora bastano cinquanta bookmarks ...
... per leggere la "vera" informazione rilevante su tutto il pianeta ...
... le agenzie di stampa sono una bella cosa, ma suvvia ...
... se ci e' stato dato un cervello, e' per usarlo (magari qualcuno non concorda) ...

Perchè dopo 15 anni a studiare i diritti in Rete e le potenzialità del Web aperto e indipendente, ha scelto di focalizzarsi sulla proposta di una riforma della politica? Per salvare la democrazia negli Usa dalla corruzione dilagante, ok: ma qual è il nesso?
«La Rete offre potenzialità di interazione straordinarie per ripristinare una partecipazione attiva e la credibilità di istituzioni screditate dal lungo rapporto privilegiato con i potentati economici, vanno colte dai cittadini, ma soprattutto dal mondo politico che determina le regole della nostra società, cioè il Congresso a Washington D.C. La libertà da limiti e la capacità di attivare l'indipendenza sono costate a Internet una lunga esclusione, ma sono la libertà e l'indipendenza dirompenti di cui c'è bisogno ovunque, sicuramente nel governo Usa».

Rockefeller: Internet is “Number One National Hazard”

According to the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, nephew of banker David Rockefeller, and former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller the internet represents a serious threat to national security. Rockefeller is not alone in this assessment. His belief that the internet is the “number one national hazard” to national security is shared by the former Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and Obama’s current director Admiral Dennis C. Blair.

Speaking before the European Parliament on Wednesday, Mirek Topolanek described the stimulus measures and financial bailouts passed by US President Barack Obama as the "way to hell." He warned that the massive costs of the stimulus plans and financial bailouts would "undermine the stability of the global financial market" and that Obama was merely repeating the errors of the Great Depression of the 1930s.


The comments also threatened to unravel the tenuous unity reached by EU member states for a joint response to the economic crisis. Last week, EU leaders reached a carefully constructed political truce designed to bury their differences and agree on a common policy ahead of the London meeting. At last Friday's summit, they pledged an additional €75 billion to finance loans by the International Monetary Fund and to double a credit line for struggling economies of Eastern European member states.

Two, start firing people. The trouble with putting off the nationalization of banks is that it delays getting rid of the executives who helped create this mess. Also, AIG’s argument that it needs to retain the best and brightest with big bonuses is bunk. Look no further than Thailand and South Korea.

The wisest thing Thailand did to recover from the 1997 Asian crisis was to close or consolidate banks and toss out management. Korea took similar steps, which allowed the government to grasp the depth of its banking woes. The arrival of outsiders began the healing. Officials in Seoul also worked to rein in the opaque, family-run conglomerates towering over the economy.

During this period he acted as long distance consultant to British born engineer David Wardale, then working on South African Railways. As education becomes an export product, Dutch universities are increasingly switching to English as the language of instruction -- some say that higher education is suffering as a result.
Students at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. Most of the college's masters programs are only offered in English.
Hundreds of students have convened on the Academieplein square in Groningen. The band is ready to play when rector magnificus Frans Zwarts lifts a glass of champagne on the steps of the university building: "Let's toast," he says in English, raising his voice. "To a very successful next academic year."

Bernanke Says Fed Aims to Ease Credit-Market Strains

March 20 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank is trying to counter “widening credit spreads” that are blunting efforts to pump cash into the economy after the Fed cut the main interest rate almost to zero.

This week’s Fed decision to buy $1.15 trillion of Treasuries and housing debt is “intended to improve conditions in private credit markets,” Bernanke said today in a speech in Phoenix, echoing a Fed statement this week. Officials are “encouraged” by market responses to Fed programs, he said.

Spettacolare eruzione di un vulcano sottomarino presso l'arcipelago di Tonga, nel Pacifico, che sta proiettando colonne di fumo, vapore e cenere a migliaia di metri di altezza. Un eventuale aumento di tre gradi delle temperature medie globali rischia di far collassare la calotta antartica occidentale. Bank of England Votes Unanimously to Print Money (Update1)

March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Bank of England policy makers voted unanimously to start printing as much as 75 billion pounds ($105 billion) in money to fight the recession as they made their final cut in the benchmark interest rate.

The bank, in its first vote on so-called quantitative easing, agreed the sum to spend over three months after debating purchases between 50 billion pounds and 100 billion pounds, according to minutes of the March 5 decision released in London. All nine policy makers backed a half-point cut in the key rate to 0.5 percent and to pay no interest on overnight deposits.

Governor Mervyn King said yesterday that the outlook for inflation will determine when policy makers reverse the program of buying bonds with newly created money and start raising interest rates. The bank last month forecast that inflation will slow to 0.3 percent in 2011, below the 2 percent target.

Ieri parlando ai militari Medvedev ha sostenuto che la Nato continua ad avvicinarsi alle frontiere russe e che quindi il Paese deve intensificare il suo programma di riarmo. Soprattutto «migliorare la capacità di combattimento e in primo luogo quella delle forze nucleari strategiche». Già a fine anno, se l'accordo sulle testate atomiche del 1991 scadrà senza essere rinnovato, la Russia schiererà nuovi missili con testate multiple che dovrebbero contrastare eventuali sistemi di difesa missilistici

I had no idea of the depth and breathe of Microsoft's operations in Government. As some might characterize their operations, they hide under the cover of darkness. They operate where no one can see them. Don't buck them, they employ people who can take your life.

My first glimpse of the dangers inherent in tackling government adoption occurred when a state senator asked me as a specialist to look at ways to cut budget dollars in a deep hole called the Department of Information Services.

That senator filed a bill that specified the state consider the total cost of ownership including life-cycle maintenance costs, the costs associated with risk issues, including security and privacy of data, and the costs of ensuring security of the IT system itself.

Essentially, we wanted to stop budget cuts in social services and shift the revenues from dead IT projects currently drawing budget money to the general fund.

In my opinion, all hell broke loose. I have never seen so many alter-egos, shills and groups invented by Microsoft to stop free software adoption in government. I have also never seen as many dumb and dumber people occupying important positions in government.

Even before this fall's deluge of catastrophic collapses , from the implosions of AIG and Lehman Bros. to exposure of Bernard Madoff's $50-billion Ponzi scheme, polls found Americans increasingly restrained in their enthusiasm for business in general. In an April 2008 survey, roughly half (47 percent) viewed corporations favorably, while nearly as many had a negative opinion (45 percent). Although support for government regulation of business hasn't risen, 50 percent of Americans think it is necessary to protect the public interest, compared with 38 percent who say that regulation usually does more harm than good. In fact, not only do more Americans worry that businesses are snooping into their personal lives (74 percent), than think government is doing so (58 percent), fully six-in-ten think that business makes too much profit, and an overwhelming 78 percent think there is too much power in the hands of large companies.

What's more, while Americans are loyal defenders of the free market, it just better be their free market. Approval of free trade fell in several Western countries from 2002 to 2007, but the largest decline among the 35 countries for which comparative data are available took place in the United States. In fact, the country with the world's largest economy is the least likely among the 47 nations surveyed in 2007 to embrace global trade. (So no surprise that despite the warnings of economists about the dangers of inserting "Buy American" provisions into the stimulus package, two-thirds of Americans thought it was a good idea.)

Phoenix , Arizona has the new distinct "honor" of being the 2nd kidnapping capital of the world, second only to Mexico and the victim of the same gangs. As a matter of fact, the US FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations) in 2007, admitted that gangs in America numbered over 100,000 strong. Thus one can easily believe that there are at least, in reality, 150 to 200,000 gang members and almost half have direct ties to Mexico. Can the US army deal with this? By summer of this year, Mexico will enter a full blown war with large scale gun battles in most of the cities. Most civil wars push out refugees. If even 10% of the 110 million living in Mexico, start running north, that will collapse the governments of the American border states, already bankrupt from the Bank Panic of 2008 and the Economic Collapse of 2009. Most civil wars actually push out closer to 30-40% of a population, thus anywhere between 30-50 million people could head north.

James Turk wrote in an report titled “Economic Suicide” in The Freemarket Gold and Money Report, March 2006: “…The dire financial straits the federal government is facing, its financial position, is even worse than it appears….In the 2005 Financial Report of the U.S. Government, U.S. Comptroller General David Walker reported that, ‘The federal government’s fiscal exposures now total more than $46 trillion, up from $20 trillion in 2000.’ Yes, it’s insane. But it’s even more insane that people buy the U.S. government’s T-Bonds and T-Bills, thinking that they are a safe, low-risk investment.”

In fiscal year 2000, 1.1 percent of the federal government’s cash flow came from new debt. This soared to 20.4 percent in 2005. During that period, total federal debt grew 40.5 percent. Higher interest rates will produce a 9.3 percent increase in interest on the national debt in the 2008 federal budget that will lead to cuts in social services, education, and health care.

There is pressure from budget belt-tighteners to reduce the government’s $46 trillion exposure by slashing future retirement benefits like Social Security or entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, food stamps, etc. Thus the most vulnerable members of society are expected to pay for structural financial problems that have left the federal government, according to competent observers associated with the Federal Reserve, functionally bankrupt.

Proprio ieri Sir Tim Berners-Lee, in una audizione alla camera dei Lord, ha denunciato i rischi per l’integrità di internet e la privacy dei cittadini se i governi non interverranno con leggi che limitino l’accesso di terzi (privati e governo) ai dati sulle attività digitali dei cittadini.

Le nuove tecnologie consentono di monitorare le pagine visitate e le attività degli utenti in rete in modo da poter poi inviare pubblicità mirate in base ai gusti delle persone.

Questo, per Berners-Lee è una inaccettabile invasione della privacy: “La gente usa internet anche quando ha dei problemi – ha spiegato – per sapere se ha contratto malattie, o riguardo alle proprie opinioni politiche: è vitale che non vengano spiati”. Accettare queste forme di intrusione – è il pensiero dell’inventore del World Wide Web – equivarrebbe a mettere le telecamere nei soggiorni delle persone o ad aprire la loro posta. ROMA - Il bilancio energetico globale non lascia speranze: per alimentare l’economia mondiale fino al 2050, mantenendo i parametri attuali, con i combustibili fossili che coprono l’80,9% dell’energia primaria, servono 856 mila miliardi di tonnellate equivalenti di petrolio. Ma, tra carbone, petrolio, gas naturale e uranio, il mondo ne ha a disposizione 800 mila. Amara conclusione: se si continua con la crescita dei consumi degli ultimi 30 anni, prima del 2050 tutte le risorse energetiche non rinnovabili attualmente accertate saranno esaurite. Queste le disarmanti premesse del dossier «Cambiamenti climatici, ambiente ed energia: linee guida per una strategia nazionale di mitigazione e adattamento», presentato oggi a Roma dal comitato scientifico del WWF Italia. I VANTAGGI - Ribattezzata col nome di biochar, quella che un tempo si chiamava terra preta de los indios (la terra nera degli indio) è diventata oggetto di studi ed esperimenti. All’Ibimet hanno avviato uno specifico progetto, denominato ITABI (Italian Biochar iniziative) nel corso del quale sono state effettuate verifiche sperimentali su alcuni terreni della Toscana, arrivando alla conclusione che aggiungendo 10 tonnellate per ettaro di biochar, si sottraggono all’atmosfera 30 tonnellate di CO2, aumentando nello stesso tempo la produzione di frumento duro del 15%. «Ma, oltre al sequestro della CO2, i vantaggi sono molteplici», sottolinea Miglietta. «Immettere biochar nel terreno significa innanzitutto sbarazzarsi di residui organici di origine agricola o alimentare che oggi vengono bruciati; poi ridurre l’uso di fertilizzanti; e ancora generare energia grazie ai gas che vengono liberati nel corso della carbonizzazione del biochar interrato».

Le président du MoDem François Bayrou a regretté, mercredi 11 mars, la décision prise "sans débat" du retour de la France au sein du commandement militaire intégré de l'OTAN, estimant qu'il s'agit d'un "aller sans retour".
Sur Europe-1, François Bayrou a déclaré qu'il trouvait "que le peuple français se voit enlever quelque chose de précieux et qu'il n'est pas juste qu'on ne lui ait pas donné l'occasion de s'exprimer", avant d'ajouter qu'il voyait "deux conséquences" à l'entrée dans l'OTAN: "nous n'aurons pas la défense européenne indépendante que nous voulions" et "c'est un aller sans retour". "Ceci s'est fait sans débat (...) parce que la volonté du pouvoir s'est exprimé de la sorte".

Un avis partagé par Martine Aubry qui estime mercredi que "rien ne justifie" le retour de la France dans l'Otan. "Rien n'impose que nous y entrions. non esattamente una "perl harbor", ma piu' realisticamente una "waterloo", wall street ha attaccato main street ed ha perso la battaglia per un piccolo problema logistico che non hanno calcolato, cioe' che le risorse sono "sempre" limitate, per certi "geni qualificati" che hanno paventato per tre decadi di essere "esperti di sicurezza nazionale" sembra un bel risultato, in considerazione del fatto che si sono solo "dimenticati" della "copertura finanziaria"

cause del problema:
1) le banche centrali "private" sono la prima causa della crisi, perche' non hanno "copertura", se si permette alle banche di creare valuta basata su "thin air", il risultato e' una copertura di riserve di "thin air"
2) il sistema elettorale americano dove i poteri pubblici sono in vendita al miglior offerente
sono la seconda causa della crisi, perche' i politici sono al soldo di wall street, anziche' della "nazione" americana
3) il disinvestimento nei mercati di consumo domestici per supportare lo sforzo di guerra, e le truffe finanziarie create da wall street per approfittare della situazione di carenza legislativa

soluzioni al problema:
1) la prima soluzione e' il "voto obbligatorio" per TUTTI i cittadini, ed il termine di due legislazioni per qualunque carica parlamentare e senatoriale, in modo da segnare la fine fine del processo di corruzione della politica
2) la seconda soluzione e' di offrire ai banchieri di scegliere, 100% nazionalizzazione o "nessun aiuto", i governi hanno sempre il potere di aspettare venti anni a rivendere gli assetti, per cui il problema degli assetti tossici non si pone, semmai si pone il problema di "asset management" e di reintroduzione di un "tasso di usura" "omnicomprensivo" (cioe' senza "penali" ed in cui le "spese" sono INCLUSE nel tasso di interesse), per evitare che le bolle speculative continuino ad occorrere
3) la terza soluzione e' il bypasse delle banche centrali e la stampa di "greenbacks" alle tesorerie, lasciando via libera alla svalutazione, e una modifica alla legislazione che permette l' uso di "greenbacks" solo in guerra o in depressione, e NON per finanziare bilanci correnti, cioe' su contabilita' separata, aperta e chiusa con decreto presidenziale, secondo norme di dettaglio da definire in via legislativa.
4) la quarta soluzione e' l' istituzione di "uffici di controllo imprese" dove contabili ed esperti governativi di carriera designati a termine con poteri di polizia giudiziaria e di revoca di licenze, ed estratti dalla spettativa delle forze armate e degli organi di carriera di giustizia, coordinati da giudici amministrativi della ragioneria dello stato, abbiano libero accesso in tutte le locazioni ed a tutti i documenti aziendali, ed analizzino giornalmente i libri contabili delle grandi imprese private riportando direttamente alla camera ed al senato situazioni critiche

cosi' come sono le cose oggi, e' piu' semplice per ogni "terrorista" comprarsi il governo e l'alta finanza, che non attaccarli, il processo e' stato inventato da wall street, ed ora chiunque, sia esso in america o nel resto del mondo, puo' usare lo stesso metodo, poiche' non esiste piu' limite, in quanto nessuno controlla i controllori

ora e' ovvio che le soluzioni esistono, il problema e' che wall street e washington non vogliono soluzioni che minano il potere di wall street, ergo la waterloo di wall street

suggerirei di trovare una soluzione in fretta, perche' altrimenti la "waterloo" potrebbe diventare l' "operazione barbarossa", che, considerando il numero ed i nomi dei banchieri di wall street correlati, (senza fare nomi che gia' tutti conoscono), sembrerebbe anche un nome appropriato alla situazione

5 miliardi per suicidarsi

Tutto inizia nel 1999 quando il Congresso abolisce la legge Glass-Steagall contro le fusioni fra banche di investimento. E’ il primo mattone tolto alle fondamenta della finanza. Poco dopo vengono i regolamenti che consentono alle banche di avere una contabilità esterna ai bilanci ovvero la scappatoia per nascondere le perdite. L’amministrazione Clinton cede alle pressioni e impedisce alla «Commodity Futures Trading Commission» di regolare i derivati, aprendo la strada a speculazioni massicce. Nel 2000 è il «Commodity Future Modernization Act» che stabilisce il divieto trasformando i derivati nel prodotto più gettonato. Quattro anni dopo, con George W. Bush alla Casa Bianca, la Sec (Consob d’America) vara uno schema di regolamento che consente alle banche livelli di indebitamenti più alti del previsto.

Ai lobbisti ancora non basta e il pressing viene premiato dal Congresso con un ennesimo passo indietro: le banche commerciali potranno determinare il bisogno di capitali sulla base di «modelli di rischio» fatti in casa, a proprio uso e consumo. A franare è il credito tradizionale ma le autorità federali indietreggiano ancora, cedendo alle richieste dei lobbisti di non stabilire limiti ai prestiti di danaro. Un argine al peggio potrebbero essere le leggi per il rispetto dei consumatori ma la Federal Reserve, nel periodo di passaggio fra Alan Greenspan e Ben Bernanke, premia anch’essa la falange dei lobbisti avocando a sé il potere di non rispettare le norme che porterebbero a limitare l’elargizione di crediti. Siamo arrivati agli ultimi anni e sono ancora i lobbisti a dettare legge: alle vittime dei crediti-capestro viene impedito di fare causa alle banche da cui si originano i mutui, i giganti Fannie Mae e Freddie Mac entrano nei subprime, l’antitrust si arrende di fronte alla nascita di «banche troppo grandi per cadere» e le società di rating danno valutazioni errate sulle le aziende che concedono prestiti.

Il domino di vittorie dei lobbisti arriva fino al 2007, quando inizia il terremoto dei subprime aprendo la strada ad un funerale che Wall Street si è preparata da sola perché, come concludono gli autori, «ogni forma di prevenzione creata dopo la Depressione è stata smantellata».

March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Bank of America Corp. will suffer “grave and irreparable harm” if Merrill Lynch & Co. employees paid $3.6 billion in bonuses just before the firm’s acquisition by the bank are publicly identified, its lawyers said.

Bank of America today filed documents in state court in Manhattan to intervene in a case brought by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to compel former Merrill Chief Executive Officer John Thain to testify about the bonus recipients.

“Neither the individual names nor the job titles bear any reasonable or relevant relationship” to Cuomo’s investigation, the firms argued in the documents. “Nor is there a reasonable or relevant reason to disclose such information to the general public.”

The information Cuomo seeks would provide a “road map” revealing which business lines the banks believe to be most valuable and enable competitors to poach the bank’s top talent, Bank of America argued in the court filing. Disclosure of the information would also cause “internal dissension and consternation,” pose security risks for the exposed bankers and their families, and cause employees to leave, according to the filings.

In 1935, SCOTUS slapped down the Congressional give-away of its legislative authority in Schechter Poultry Corporation v. US (295 U.S. 495). After citing the basic tenets of the Constitution's Article 1, the court ruled, "The Congress is not permitted to abdicate or to transfer to others the essential legislative functions with which it is thus vested."

Some were quick to apply that SCOTUS ruling to the Federal Reserve. There were howlings, political explosions, and much noisy gibberish -- and then every criminality of the Federal Reserve simply continued.

(Make a note. That 1935 SCOTUS ruling also applies to Congress' unconstitutional transfer of its exclusive war powers to Bush, prior to Bush's unconstitutional invasion of Iraq. For that unconstitutional transfer, all 373 assenting members and senators are co-conspirators in the felony conspiracy against our soldiers' rights to be sent to war ONLY at the expressed order of Congress. For his invasion order, Bush and his admirals and generals round out that felonious pack of co-conspirators, as defined in the federal statute, 18 USC 241. Felony forfeits all immunities, legislative, executive, and judicial. All of them should have been criminally prosecuted immediately after the illegal invasion. Because that felony violation of our soldiers' rights has resulted in death and maiming, penalties can include life imprisonment or death -- as specified in 18 USC 241.)

CIA Director Leon Panetta has said the United States will continue to engage in extraordinary rendition but will use it rarely and will be more selective about the countries prisoners are sent to. Some of the prisoners who have been transferred by the United States to other countries claim they were tortured.

The memo on extraordinary rendition, written by Jay S. Bybee, then assistant attorney general in the office of legal counsel, further said that prisoners held outside the United States were not protected by U.S. laws against torture, nor against an international treaty banning torture.

The Bybee memo also said that a 1998 law making it U.S. policy not to hand over prisoners to country where they may be tortured was invalid because it unconstitutionally interferes with presidential powers.

However, the possibility that prisoners might be tortured after a transfer to another government outside the criminal justice system appeared to be on the minds of George W. Bush's White House lawyers. The memo suggested ways to U.S. officials could transfer prisoners to countries where they may indeed be tortured without making them legally liable for their treatment.

"To fully shield our personnel from criminal liability, it is important that the United States not enter in an agreement with a foreign country, explicitly or implicitly, to transfer a detainee to that country for the purpose of having the individual tortured," Bybee wrote.

"So long as the United States doe not intend for a detainee to be tortured post-transfer, however, no criminal liability will attach to a transfer even if the foreign country receiving the detainee does torture him," he wrote.

Jameel Jaffer, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's national security project, said the memo, taken with the others released Monday, shows the White House used the war on terror to claim broad powers.

"These memos were meant to provide the president with a blank check with respect to the rights of not only prisoners overseas but people in the United States as well," he said.
