Microsoft matura, l’open source altrettanto? - VALERIO MARIANI

Di certo l’obbiettivo è stato raggiunto. La conference call dei massimi vertici di Microsoft, in cui si annunciano iniziative interessanti circa una maggiore “apertura” dei propri prodotti, ha acceso una reazione a catena, ancora agli inizi, tra commenti di blogger, giornalisti, fan dell’una e dell’altra sponda ed esponenti autorevoli del mondo open source.

Un’inversione di rotta, se lo è, richiesta, come ammesso dalla stessa Microsoft, dai clienti. La parolina magica non è probabilmente “apertura” ma, piuttosto, “interoperabilità”. Come specificato immediatamente da Microsoft, e messo subito in risalto dai soliti fanatici del movimento open, Microsoft si guarda bene dal rendere disponibile a chicchessia il frutto del lavoro di migliaia di suoi collaboratori e continuerà a tutelare i propri brevetti registrati. E ci mancherebbe altro.

Finora l’open source ha mostrato due facce. La prima, encomiabile, fatta di principi e idee innovative, che l’hanno fatto apprezzare in ambito enterprise. La seconda, necessaria, che ha dovuto scimmiottare interfacce per non sembrare degli alieni a un pubblico consumer troppo abituato a finestre e “salva con nome”. Ora sarebbe il caso di prediligere la prima e osare di più per lasciarsi alle spalle la seconda.

In un mondo liquido non esistono nemici da combattere, esistono molteplicità di vedute, condivisibili o discutibili, chi non avrà l’umiltà di guardarsi dentro e, se necessario, cambiare rotta, diverrà la vera isola chiusa e dimenticata in mezzo all’oceano. E la parola “open” potrebbe lasciare completamente il passo a “interoperabilità”.

Quanto sopra penso dimostri in maniera eloquente che la rivoluzione grafica non sia partita da Microsoft, ma sia arrivata piano piano, alla fine, "anche" da Microsoft.

L' "open source" e' una filosofia che vuole sostituire un sistema "aperto", ad un sistema "chiuso" costruito in maniera tale che l' industria possa mantenere il cliente afferrandolo per le estremita' penzolanti in mezzo alle gambe, in modo che il cliente non solo porga il portafoglio, ma anche, in alcuni casi, sia sottomesso alle "sorveglianza" del paese e dell' industria produttrice, o a qualunque tirapiedi del paese o dell' azienda medesima, da qualunque paese del mondo, per agende politiche imprevedibili da chiunque non possieda una sfera di cristallo per vedere il futuro.

Il dibattito non e' esatto se si contrappone solo Windows verso Linux, il contrasto filosofico e' ben piu' complesso, per esempio:

L' equivalente "open" di Microsoft Windows e' REACTOS
(non funziona molto bene ma sta migliorando)
Gli equivalenti "open" di Unix, Irix, AIX, HP-UX sono Linux GNU, BSD, Minix eccetera
L' equivalente "open" di NextStep e' OpenStep/GNUStep
L'equivalente "open" di OS/X e' Darwin
L'equivalente "open" di Solaris e' Open Solaris
... e cosi' via ...

Essendo gli ultimi tre supportati dalle case madri (Sun, Apple e Sun), non esiste molta polemica. Nel mondo Microsoft e Unix la situazione e' differente perche' una certa parte della chiesa dei sistemi operativi (Microsoft e SCO) sta' cercando in tutti i modi possibili di sabotare la seconda chiesa dei sistemi operativi (IBM, Novell-SUSE, Silicon Graphics e RedHat). Ovviamente la prima chiesa sta' cercando di monopolizzare il mercato, fino a prova contraria, almeno restanti i fatti degli ultimi dieci anni.

L' "open source" non e' una garanzia assoluta che il sorgente fornito possa compilare ed essere alterabile o utilizzabile per le esigenze dell' utente, ma e' un passo verso la possibilita' di uso di questo tipo. In primo luogo e' necessario dire che il processo di modifica di codice sorgente e' molto piu' semplice che non il processo di "reverse engineering" dal codice macchina. In secondo luogo in taluni casi, ove sia per esempio necessario preservare segreti industriali o anche di stato, l' accesso al codice sorgente e' un requisito indispensabile, e nel secondo caso anche obbligatorio.

Anche l'interoperabilita' e' un requisito importante, ed e' apprezzabile che Microsoft offra oggi questa soluzione, ma resta il fatto che l'interoperabilita' non soddisfi, da sola, i criteri piu' stringenti di sicurezza (perlomeno quelli di sicurezza nazionale, l' industria e' libera, quando non sussistano vincoli di legge "obbligatori", di farsi spiare dall' industria informatica, se cosi' vuole).

Si deve dare credito a Microsoft del fatto di aver annunciato la disponibilita' del codice "sorgente" ma si deve altresi' far notare che il codice "sorgente" e' solo disponibile per chi scelgono loro, il che rende ovvio il fatto che il potenziale cliente senza questa disponibilita' concessa, si trovi in condizione di dover optare per altre soluzioni che non includono Microsoft.

Purtroppo pero', e qui il giudizio della Corte Europea e' fondato e legittimo, Microsoft rifiuta di rendersi compatibile con il resto del mercato, cercando di sostituire "standards" proprietari ai veri "standards" di pubblico dominio, ed agendo pertanto come monopolista in abuso della propria posizione di monopolio.

L' interoperabilita' e' un fattore molto importante, ma la sicurezza, la riservatezza e l'interoperabilita' insieme, sono tre fattori piu' importanti di un fattore. Se l' Europa un giorno decida di applicare agli americani la stessa politica che loro applicano a noi, allora semplicemente si tratterebbe di rendere obbligatorio all' interno della Comunita' Europea un sistema operativo prodotto interamente in Europa, e di sorgente chiuso, interamente brevettato dall' universita' di Amsterdam, per esempio, ed utilizzante un certo chip brevettato da Philips in Olanda, con una serie di "backdoors" dove le autorita' europee possano decidere come e quando "bloccare" a piacimento qualunque macchina fuori dall' Europa, o andare a curiosare quando e come vogliano, in qualunque macchina fuori dall' Europa.

Ora io pongo ai sostenitori della combinazione Intel/Windows la seguente domanda:
Qualcuno vi paga per prendere queste decisioni, oppure vi fa' piacere che dall' America, nella infinita saggezza di questo paese, qualcuno vi controlli "per il vostro bene" ? (almeno cosi' dicono loro). Sinceramente io sono soddisfatto di sapere che i "colossi" americani usano AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, VMS, BSD ed anche Linux, quando vedro' Boeing usare Windows, penso che sara' ora per me di prendere l'autobus. Questo detto, la mia e' una opinione personale, fate quel che vi pare, ma cercate di essere obiettivi e completi nelle vostre analisi.

E fatemi anche sapere la risposta alla domanda sopra, sono in trepidante attesa ...

Difficile verificare quel che capita sotto il regime dell'ineffabile Kim Jong-il, visto che il Nord Corea è un grande buco nero da cui nulla trapela e non sono nemmeno disponibili dati ufficiali circa il reddito pro capite medio e il livello di povertà di quella che Amnesty considera una delle nazioni peggio messe sotto l'aspetto della tutela dei diritti. Certo, potrebbe di «calunnie, montate ad arte dalle forze ultraconservatrici della Corea del Sud», come sostiene Pyongyang.

Che, en passant, smentisce anche di aver mai destinato all'esercito le provviste di riso che la Croce Rossa sudcoreana elargisce a milioni di sacchi al Nord e che in teoria dovrebbero andare alla popolazione civile ridotta letteralmente alla fame. In questo caso il traffico sarebbe stato osservato e testimoniato dalle guardie di frontiera ma la smenttia è ugualmente veemente.

Vietnam was a chemical war for oil, permanently contaminating large regions and countries downriver with Agent Orange, and environmentally the most devastating war in world history. But since 1991, the U.S. has staged four nuclear wars using depleted uranium weaponry, which, like Agent Orange, meets the U.S. government definition of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Vast regions in the Middle East and Central Asia have been permanently contaminated with radiation.

And what about our soldiers? Terry Jemison of the Department of Veterans Affairs reported this week to the American Free Press that “Gulf-era veterans” now on medical disability since 1991 number 518,739, with only 7,035 reported wounded in Iraq in that same 14-year period.

This week the American Free Press dropped a “dirty bomb” on the Pentagon by reporting that eight out of 20 men who served in one unit in the 2003 U.S. military offensive in Iraq now have malignancies. That means that 40 percent of the soldiers in that unit have developed malignancies in just 16 months.

The medical profession has been active in the cover-up - just as they were in hiding the effects from the American public - of low level radiation from atmospheric testing and nuclear power plants. A medical doctor in Northern California reported being trained by the Pentagon with other doctors, months before the 2003 war started, to diagnose and treat soldiers returning from the 2003 war for mental problems only.

Medical professionals in hospitals and facilities treating returning soldiers were threatened with $10,000 fines if they talked about the soldiers or their medical problems. They were also threatened with jail.

BOSTON - A combination of Microsoft and Yahoo could reshape the Internet landscape for millions of Web users: Would the two companies join their online portals? Could they rethink the desktop computer to integrate Web content more directly?

... Interesting, an operating systems and applications company buying into a web only company running on free BSD ... keeping in mind MS already uses akamai as front end for their web presence ... seems like they may try to use free BSD into an MS product as they did with mosaic into explorer ? ... Windows could make good use for sure of the SECURITY of BSD ... and this seems to be a step in the same direction of Apple with OSX ...

... it would be interesting to hear what the BSD community thinks of this deal, and future implications ... maybe next Sun or Ibm may want to buy Google ? ...
