The Tata Nano is a city car — a small, affordable, rear-engined, four-passenger car aimed primarily at the Indian market — first presented by India's Tata Motors at the 9th annual Auto Expo on January 10, 2008, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India.[4]

Tata targets the vehicle as the least expensive production car in the world[5] — aiming for a starting price of Rs.100,000 (approximately US$2,000).[6][7]. On February 26, 2009, Tata Motors announced that the commercial launch of Tata Nano will be on March 23, 2009.[8]

The news magazine Newsweek identifies the Nano as a part of a "new breed of 21st-century cars" that embody "a contrarian philosophy of smaller, lighter, cheaper" and portend a new era in inexpensive personal transportation — and potentially, "global gridlock" [9]. The Wall Street Journal confirms a global trend toward small cars, which includes the Nano.[10]

The prefix "nano-" derives from the Greek root 'nanos', meaning dwarf. "Nano" also means "small" in Gujarati, the native language of the Tata family,[11] founders of the Tata Group.

That is one of the overriding problems in Afghanistan: A lot of the efforts are simply wasted. SPIEGEL ONLINE: So the US does not want more soldiers from the Europeans -- they want help in other areas and more control?

Shapiro: Yes, the European debate has totally missed the boat on that. Their whole focus on troop deployments neglects what is actually happening. The Americans do not want a few thousand more NATO troops wandering around in Afghanistan. For the immediate future, they are prepared to play that part on their own in exchange for greater control. This is a serious threat to NATO and to trans-Atlantic solidarity -- but probably good for the situation in Afghanistan.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you think the mission in Afghanistan will become more and more a US operation?

Shapiro: Washington will not kick NATO out, of course. But the current structure will become increasingly irrelevant as more US troops arrive. This is already happening. Therefore, the debate with the Europeans should no longer focus on troop contributions. NATO partners have 35,000 soldiers in Afghanistan -- they have increased their troops a lot in recent years. The problem is they are not using the resources they have already committed very well. The Americans don't care about more European troops. They want more effective commitments, which means using resources already deployed more efficiently and offering new capabilities that fill urgent needs.

That leaves the Russians. The 173-meter (567-foot) Dimitry Donskoy, for example, is the world's largest strategic submarine. It has twice the displacement of the Kursk, which sank in 2000, and enough nuclear warheads on board for any conceivable disaster. According to the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda, the Donskoy could "simultaneously destroy dozens of cities like New York, or level half of Afghanistan."

A member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee today made the case for quantitative easing, the controversial measure to boost the economy by "printing money" to increase the money supply.

Andrew Sentance said there was a “strong case” for the use of quantitative easing to avoid “persistent and prolonged deflation”.

Rate-setters fear that, having cut interest rates to a historic low of 1 per cent, they have exhausted their arsenal to fight off a fall in the general price levels that would send Britain into a spiral of deferred demand and declining output.

People who should know better have been speculating publicly that the government might need to nationalize our largest banks. This irresponsible chatter is causing tremendous turmoil in financial markets. The Obama administration needs to make clear immediately that nationalization -- government seizing control of ownership and operations of a company -- is not a viable option.

Unlike the talking heads, I have actually nationalized a large bank. When I headed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) during the banking crisis of the 1980s, the FDIC recapitalized and took control of Continental Illinois Bank, which was then the country's seventh largest bank.

The Federal Reserve chairman, delivering semiannual testimony required in legislation written by the late lawmakers, will describe a U.S. economy returning to growth next year without generating many new jobs. Even with credit markets thawing, Fed officials see unemployment persisting at 8 percent or higher through the final three months of 2010.

“We could have an awkward situation where the recession ends and the job-loss situation continues for some time,” says Christopher Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. in New York. That “probably hasn’t been a factor that has pressured the Fed since the 1990-1991 recession.”

A recovery with slow job growth would keep pressure on the Fed to hold interest rates around zero and to continue or expand billions of dollars in lending programs and asset purchases. It would also mark a failure to fulfill the mandate of the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter on Oct. 27, 1978, that the central bank achieve both maximum employment and stable prices.

Pound was also frequently visited by his protegé, a Library of Congress researcher named Eustace Mullins. Pound commissioned Mullins to write a book about the history of the Federal Reserve and to tell it like a detective story. Pound believed that the bankers in charge of the Federal Reserve and their associates in the Bank of England were responsible for getting the United States into both World Wars, in an effort to drive up government debt beyond sustainable levels (the national debt indeed rose astronomically because of the wars). Pound advocated an abandonment of the current system of money being created by private bankers. He favored government issued currency[18] with no interest to pay, preventing the need for an income tax and national debt, much like the system used by the Pennsylvania Colony from 1723 to 1764.[citation needed] Pound argued that his views on money aligned with those of Thomas Jefferson, as well as with Benjamin Franklin's Colonial Scrip.

Twisted radio beams could untangle the airwaves

However, Swedish physicists say that twisting radio beams into a helical shape as they are transmitted could help ease the congestion.

In 1912, Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, made a fateful decision that oil, rather than coal, would thereafter fuel the ships of the Royal Navy. This had far-reaching consequences because it meant a dependence on foreign oil supplies rather than Welsh coal. It led, through government involvement, to the rapid growth of the Anglo-Persian oil company, later to become British Petroleum (BP). The rest of the great powers rapidly followed suit. Conventional, easily extractable oil now provides ~40% of the world’s energy supply. We depend on oil not only for most long-distant transport (cars, trucks, trains, ships, planes) but also as a chemical feedstock for plastics, and for fertilisers and pesticides integral to modern agriculture. Economic growth involving increased industrial and agricultural production over the past century has been inextricably linked to increased oil usage. Growth through globalisation, in particular, depends on cheap long-haul transport which, in turn, is based on an enormous and complex world-wide infrastructure for extraction and distribution of oil. Within the developed world we have become particularly addicted to cheap air travel based on an abundant supply of conventional oil.

The West needs France to rejoin Nato

Is the time now right for France to make a move that can reshape world geopolitics by deciding to rejoin Nato? The move seems counter-intuitive.

General de Gaulle quit the military structure of Nato in 1966 though France remains a member of the political treaty organisation.

De Gaulle did so to mark French independence and sovereign control over its military. He satisfied the anti-American Left and the nationalist Right in France who objected to any supranational involvement in military matters.

In different ways this line has been supported by all de Gaulle's successors. But it is hard to see how a sovereign, French-alone geopolitics has helped advance French national interests or made the world safer.

Diesel → Natural Gas Conversion Kit Cuts Diesel Use by 71%, PM by 80%, NOx by 15%

Initial testing of Hybrid Fuel Systems’ conversion kits to retrofit medium and heavy-duty diesels for dual-fuel operation with natural gas showed reductions in PM emissions of 78.9% and NOx emissions of 15%, according to results from an independent laboratory. Use of the Fuel 2 kit enabled a 71.2% displacement of diesel with natural gas.
