Not Just Urban Legend
Organ trafficking was long considered a myth. But now mounting evidence suggests it is a real and growing problem, even in America.

By the time her work brought her back to the United States, Nancy Scheper-Hughes had spent more than a decade tracking the illegal sale of human organs across the globe. Posing as a medical doctor in some places and a would-be kidney buyer in others, she had linked gangsters, clergymen and surgeons in a trail that led from South Africa, Brazil and other developing nations all the way back to some of her own country's best medical facilities. So it was that on an icy February afternoon in 2003, the anthropologist from the University of California, Berkeley, found herself sitting across from a group of transplant surgeons in a small conference room at a big Philadelphia hospital.

By accident or by design, she believed, surgeons in their unit had been transplanting black-market kidneys from residents of the world's most impoverished slums into the failing bodies of wealthy dialysis patients from Israel, Europe and the United States. According to Scheper-Hughes, the arrangements were being negotiated by an elaborate network of criminals who kept most of the money themselves. For about $150,000 per transplant, these organ brokers would reach across continents to connect buyers and sellers, whom they then guided to "broker-friendly" hospitals here in the United States (places where Scheper-Hughes says surgeons were either complicit in the scheme or willing to turn a blind eye). The brokers themselves often posed as or hired clergy to accompany their clients into the hospital and ensure that the process went smoothly. The organ sellers typically got a few thousand dollars for their troubles, plus the chance to see an American city.

Nulla di tecnico come l’Hindemburg Omen, ma certamente un brutto cliente; significa il crollo dell’indice Shanghai Composite: due anni fa, dopo mesi di rally, crollò di colpo di 268 punti, ovvero dell’8,8%. L’altro giorno di 265, ovvero il 7,7%.

Jay Edelson, a Chicago lawyer who filed the lawsuit, said in a news release that Amazon's actions could have far-reaching consequences if allowed to stand.

"Amazon.com had no more right to hack into people's Kindles than its customers have the right to hack into Amazon's bank account to recover a mistaken overpayment," Edelson said. "Technology companies increasingly feel that because they have the ability to access people's personal property, they have the right to do so. That is 100 percent contrary to the laws of this country."

Shanghai rompe la regola del figlio unico, imposta alla popolazione urbana della Cina da 30 anni. La municipalità della capitale economica della Cina - scrive oggi il China Daily online -, annuncia che incoraggerà attivamente le coppie formate da figli unici, cioè i figli di quella regola, ad avere un secondo figlio. Lo scopo: contrastare l’invecchiamento della popolazione e il peso crescente di genitori e nonni in pensione sui figli unici. «Noi raccomandiamo alle coppie qualificate di avere due figli perchè in questo modo si potrà aiutare a ridurre la percentuale di persone anziane (fra la popolazione) e a prevenire una futura carenza di manodopera», ha spiegato al giornale Xie Lingli, direttore della pianificazione familiare di Shanghai, aggiungendo che la campagna di incentivi sarà affidata a volontari che distribuiranno i volantini informativi sotto le porte. Le coppie, aggiunge, avranno diritto a consulenze finanziarie e assistenza psicologica.

Such is the enmity, in fact, that KRG's president, Massoud Barzani, and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki haven't spoken in over a year. Recently, KRG Prime Minister Nechirwan Barzani said that Arab-Kurdish relations in Iraq are at their lowest point since Saddam was in power. With Iraq's Sunni-Shi'ite sectarian violence largely in check, the Kurdish-Arab dispute has become the most worrisome fault line in Iraq.

The flight warning computer uses only AOA data and flap/slat position in normal law. In alternate law, the speed becomes part of the threshold calculation along with AOA information.

Do you notice something ironic about this considering it appears one of the ways you find yourself in alternate law conditions is loss of airspeed indication?

On Friday, it was “1984” and another Orwell book, “Animal Farm,” that were dropped down the memory hole — by Amazon.com.

In a move that angered customers and generated waves of online pique, Amazon remotely deleted some digital editions of the books from the Kindle devices of readers who had bought them.

An Amazon spokesman, Drew Herdener, said in an e-mail message that the books were added to the Kindle store by a company that did not have rights to them, using a self-service function. “When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers’ devices, and refunded customers,” he said.

Amazon effectively acknowledged that the deletions were a bad idea. “We are changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers’ devices in these circumstances,” Mr. Herdener said.

Secret Bush Administration Plan to Suspend US Constitution
"Continuity of Government" (COG) Provisions activated in 2001

Several months before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld approved an updated version of the U.S. Army's secret operational Continuity of Government (COG) plans.

A draft document published by the whistleblowing website Wikileaks entitled, "Army Regulation 500-3, Emergency Employment of Army and Other Resources. Army Continuity of Operations (COOP) Program," dated 19 January 2001, spells out changes in Army doctrine.

Issued by Headquarters, Department of the Army and signed off by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the Secretary of the Army, the document is affixed with a warning: "Destruction Notice: Destroy by any method that will prevent disclosure of contents or reconstruction of the document." The restricted document as published by Wikileaks states:

Under the heading of "civil disturbance planning," the U.S. military is training troops and police to suppress democratic opposition in America. The master plan, Department of Defense Civil Disturbance Plan 55-2, is code-named, "Operation Garden Plot". Originated in 1968, the "operational plan" has been updated over the last three decades, most recently in 1991, and was activated during the Los Angeles "riots" of 1992, and more than likely during the recent anti-WTO "Battle in Seattle." ...

Equipped with flexible "military operations in urban terrain" and "operations other than war" doctrine, lethal and "less-than-lethal" high-tech weaponry, US "armed forces" and "elite" militarized police units are being trained to eradicate "disorder", "disturbance" and "civil disobedience" in America. Further, it may very well be that police/military "civil disturbance" planning is the animating force and the overarching logic behind the incredible nationwide growth of police paramilitary units, a growth which coincidentally mirrors rising levels of police violence directed at the American people, particularly "non-white" poor and working people. Ma l'America sa sempre correggersi
A mettere insieme tutto questo, la prima riflessione che sovviene è semplice: ci è andata ancora bene. Ci è andata ancora bene che, a fronte di così tante e sistematiche violazioni dei principi e della prassi costituzionale degli Stati Uniti, il sistema nel suo complesso abbia retto. Abbia retto al punto da consentire l’elezione di un presidente ben diverso, come Barack Obama, il cui avvento alla Casa Bianca appare sempre più come provvidenziale. Più laicamente, si potrebbe osservare che i sistemi costituzionali ben congegnati, esattamente come le barche ben disegnate, riescono ad autocorreggere, perlomeno entro certi limiti, gli sbandamenti, gli scarrocci e lo scadere della rotta. Mai come in questi mesi è apparsa centrale la misura che vieta a un presidente di restare in carica per più di due mandati. Per tutte le volte che questa norma, introdotta dopo l’eterna presidenza di Franklin Delano Roosevelt, è stata maledetta in America e altrove, per lo spreco di talento che essa comporta (si pensi a Reagan o a Clinton), è proprio in momenti come questo che occorre renderle omaggio. Perché il fatto che il Commander in chief, dopo al massimo otto anni, torni a essere un Mr. Smith qualunque può darsi che non sia sufficiente a ricordare a ogni funzionario che la sua prima lealtà consista nel servire la legge. Ma di sicuro rende molto probabile che, allo scadere del periodo, le magagne saltino fuori.

WASHINGTON — Air Force officials are warning that unless their budget is increased dramatically, and soon, the military's high-flying branch won't dominate the skies as it has for decades.

After more than six years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Air Force's aging jet fighters, bombers, cargo aircraft and gunships are at the breaking point, they say, and expensive, ultramodern replacements are needed fast.

"What we've done is put the requirement on the table that says, 'If we're going to do the missions you're going to ask us to do, it will require this kind of investment,'" Maj. Gen. Paul Selva, the Air Force's director of strategic planning, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"Failing that, we take what is already a geriatric Air Force," Selva said, "and we drive it for another 20 years into an area of uncertainty."

Addio a McNamara, fu l'architetto della guerra in Vietnam

Ex segretario alla Difesa statunitense e "falco" convinto ammise le sue responsabilità in un'autobiografia
È morto a 93 anni nella sua casa di Washington Robert McNamara, l’ex segretario alla Difesa statunitense considerato il principale architetto della guerra in Vietnam. Capo del Pentagono durante le presidenze di John F. Kennedy e Lyndon Johnson, quindi per 13 anni presidente della Banca Mondiale, negli otto anni passati al Pentagono, McNamara guidò l’escalation militare americana nel Sudest asiatico durante gli anni cruciali dell’avvio della guerra nella regione, il «pantano del Vietnam» che fu il più costoso, cruento e criticato conflitto dopo la seconda guerra mondiale.

McNamara, il segretario alla Difesa con il mandato più lungo della storia americana, ha avuto un ruolo centrale anche durante la crisi della Baia dei Porci e dei missili sovietici a Cuba, illustrandosi come uno dei fautori della linea più dura. Ma il suo nome è legato soprattutto alla «McNamara's war», di cui gli americani lo hanno considerato ampiamente responsabile. Una responsabilità che l’ex capo del Pentagono, un "falco" dichiarato, ha accettato nell’autobiografia scritta nel 1995.
La sua vita, anche dopo il ritorno alla vita privata, è stata decisamente segnata dal Vietnam. McNamara lasciò il Pentagono - ricorda il New york Times, convinto che la guerra fosse qualcosa di inutile. Fino a definirla, nel libro del 1995 «sbagliata, decisamente sbagliata». Nato nel 1916 a Oakland in California, raggiunse il grado di tenente colonnello nelle forze armate Usa durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Once-Mighty SGI Sold to Rackable for $25 Million

A collective shudder rippled through Silicon Valley on Wednesday morning, as Rackable Systems announced its purchase of Silicon Graphics Inc. for just $25 million in cash.

If you travel all the way back to 1997, SGI was pulling in close to $4 billion in revenue a year. The company produced some of the flashiest computers on the planet for handling tough graphics jobs. SGI was the next big thing in Silicon Valley, and people adored the company.

Cani poliziotto morti per il caldo
Erano stati lasciati in auto sotto il sole

I due cani sono stati trovati morti all'interno di un veicolo privato fuori dalla sede centrale della polizia di Nottingham, nel centro dell’Inghilterra: ieri l’agente che aveva i due cani in consegna, e che era in servizio, li aveva lasciati nella sua auto in un parcheggio, sotto il sole cocente. In questi giorni in Gran Bretagna si registrano temperature record come 29° che, spiegano i responsabili della Rspca (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), in un'automobile possono salire a 47°.

IMPATTO AMBIENTALE E OPEN SOURCE - Per sviluppare quest'auto gli ingegneri della “Riversimple” hanno lavorato per nove lunghi anni. Tuttavia secondo Sebastian Piech non è stata fatica sprecata perché la vettura rappresenta un'autentica rivoluzione. Oltre ad essere costruita con materiale al 100% riciclabile, il suo tasso d'inquinamento è innocuo. Per ogni km percorso la "Riversimple Urban Car" immette nella atmosfera solo 30 grammi di anidride carbonica. Le auto più ecologiche che oggi circolano nelle nostre città ne immettono almeno 150 grammi. Inoltre il rampollo della casa automobilistica tedesca afferma che la nuova forma di pagamento che offre il carburante gratuitamente stimolerà le persone a non cambiare continuamente auto, ma a utilizzare sempre la stessa. «Non state comprando un prodotto» dichiara entusiasta Piech al Times di Londra. «Siete in procinto di acquistare un servizio di trasporto personale». Dello stesso avviso John Constable, presidente di Riversimple: «È qualcosa di più di una semplice auto ecologica». Per accelerare lo sviluppo della tecnologia, la società ha deciso di seguire la filosofia "open source": chiunque volesse migliorare questo progetto potrà consultare gratuitamente sul web il design e il motore della vettura.

Un'opera mastodontica, realizzata con l'oro regalato dai fedeli di tutto il mondo in 20 anni di pellegrinaggi, e che però non manca di suscitare polemiche. Su alcuni siti cattolici, tra cui www.cattoliciromani.com, sono diversi i fedeli che lamentano il «tradimento» dei valori che impersonava il santo. «Tutto questo lo trovo lontano anni luce dalla spiritualità francescana e dal modo di vivere ed essere di Padre Pio», scrive un utente. E ancora: «Credo che questa luce sia un bell'esempio di arte e passerà alla storia ma sicuramente San Francesco e San Pio non avrebbero mai voluto, anche perché la loro vita è stata ben lontana (anni luce) da questi mosaici».
