Libertà come fine e il pericolo della pulizia etica
È in gioco il senso delle nostre libertà, dei nostri diritti individuali e della nostra stessa democrazia

se a votare, nel 1948, fossero state solo le persone che ancora adesso si ritengono le sole davvero colte - e, allora, esaltavano la pianificazione sovietica come superamento del capitalismo e del mercato - saremmo diventati una delle Repubbliche popolari. Sbagliava perché, oggi, con l'aria che tira, saremmo allo «Stato di pulizia etica».

Per la cultura liberale è «il» Fine in una società «giusta», dove gli Individui godano della più ampia sfera di autonomia alla sola condizione di non arrecare danno agli altri. Per il neopuritanesimo dell'ultima ora, la libertà è «un» mezzo per la realizzazione di una società «buona», dove la sfera di autonomia individuale è non solo ridotta, ma etero-diretta all'affermazione della Virtù generale.

o è democrazia liberale, per dirla con Isaiah Berlin, «pluralismo di valori», o non è; o è democrazia di popolo (di popolo), o è tirannia di una minoranza vociante.
