WASHINGTON (April 21) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday the Air Force is not doing enough to help in the Iraq and Afghanistan war effort, complaining that some military leaders are "stuck in old ways of doing business."

... well, the other side of the story ...
... that all air forces face, everywhere on the planet ...
... is the inadequacy of budgets ...
... to modernize equipment ...
... the problem of air forces ...
... is that all their purpose of being ...
... comes down to maintaining air superiority ...
... the choice of remote controlled close air support ...
... may save a few bucks here and there ...
... but does not solve the giant problem ...
... of the definition of inflation and purchasing power of budgets ...
... a tripled price of fuels ...
... may not affect as much walking infantry ...
... but does affect strategic transport, for instance ...
... a weak dollar may not affect the army as much ...
... but does affect navy and air force complex weapon systems ...
... pricing and maintenance ...
... cutting down on air superiority ...
... to expand close air support capabilities ...
... may lead to have better results in Afghanistan ...
... at the cost of losing focus on the air defense at home ...
... are you folks really sure ...
... that your space-wars equipment ...
... can shutdown somebody flying at 100 feet ground at 500 miles per hour ? ...
... or, even worse, a cruise flying at three times that speed ? ...
... in doubt, the bottom line seems to be, as usual ...
... that logistics win wars, and logistics require fat budgets ...
... if you need to save money somewhere, close the counties in the whole US ...
... they are useless duplicate structures of the cities ...
... or vice-versa, does not matter ...
... or liberalize light drugs ...
... and shut down half the prisons ...
... or re-establish the draft ...
... and cut 90% on "contractors" speculation ...
... or mandate use of free/open software in the whole government ...
... or move the government agencies at 50% telecommuting ...
... and shut down half the public real estate drag ...
... or substitute duplicates in states and counties with a unified institution ...
... of macro-regions ...
... there are a lot of better places to reorganize budgets ...
... than defense ...
... at worse, just call that war over ...
... ask the Russians how they ended up going home after eight years ...
... and disputable results ...
