"Rome was officially settled after the forced removal of the Cherokee Indians on the Trail of Tears. The five founders each placed a name in a hat, and Rome was the name drawn. Daniel R. Mitchell put the name Rome in the hat because of the seven hills and several rivers. During its early years, the city served agrarian needs and the cotton trade, and gained a rail spur to Kingston, Georgia"
